Lake Zurich Projects, Inside and Out
Lake Zurich is built around its namesake. The lake, once called Cedar Lake, sits completely inside the village, and about 0.4 square miles of the village's 7.3 square miles is water. For concrete contractors serving Lake Zurich, the work is mostly patios, driveways and slabs for homes built from the 1950s onward.
How the village grew
Lake Zurich incorporated on September 29, 1896, and stayed small for decades. It had 850 people in 1950. Wikipedia notes that housing development began in the 1950s, and the census followed: 3,458 in 1960, 8,225 in 1980 and 14,947 in 1990. The 2020 count was 19,759 people in 7,262 housing units. That gives the village a range of house ages, from the first postwar subdivisions to homes built as the population nearly doubled during the 1980s.
Patios for outdoor living
A new or larger backyard patio is a common Lake County project, and it is built the same way whether the slab is plain or stamped:
- Layout: we mark the shape and check it against setbacks, easements and where water will drain
- Excavation: remove topsoil and soft material to a consistent depth
- Base: compacted gravel, graded so the finished slab pitches away from the house
- Pour and finish: air-entrained concrete, then broom, exposed aggregate or stamped finish
- Joints and cure: control joints cut on time and a proper cure before furniture goes on
Stamped concrete is popular for patios here because it gives the look of stone around a firepit or seating area in one continuous slab.
High ground and hard winters
Lake Zurich sits at about 886 feet, higher than the suburbs to the southeast, but it gets the same freeze-thaw winters. Air-entrained concrete, a compacted base and properly spaced joints are what keep a slab together through those winters, and we do not skip any of them on a patio just because it carries less weight than a driveway.
Driveways along the main routes
U.S. Route 12 came through in 1922 and Illinois Route 22 in 1927, and both still carry traffic through the village. Driveways off busier streets see more salt spray and slush from plows. When we replace one, we pay attention to the apron and the first few feet near the street, where salt does the most damage, and we recommend sealing once the concrete has cured.
Garages and sheds
Detached garages, workshops and sheds need slabs too. We pour garage floors with a vapor barrier and a compacted base, and shed pads sized a little larger than the building so water drips off the roof onto gravel or grass, not the slab edge.
Repair versus replacement on older slabs
Homes from the village's first building decades often still have original walks and steps. If the slab is level and only has hairline cracks or light surface wear, cleaning, crack filling and sealing can add years. If sections have heaved, sunk or broken into loose pieces, the base has failed, and a new slab on proper gravel is the fix. We show you what we find during the visit so the decision is clear.
Where a patio or walk runs downhill, we also check whether the slope is carrying runoff across the slab and pooling at the low end. Adjusting the grade or adding a slight cross-pitch during replacement keeps the surface from staying wet.

Lake Zurich Questions
Which patio finish holds up near the lake?
A broom finish or exposed aggregate gives good traction when wet. Stamped concrete works too, with a slip-resistant additive in the sealer.
How big should a shed pad be?
We usually make it a few inches larger than the shed footprint on each side so the walls sit fully on concrete, while roof runoff lands off the slab.
Do I need a permit for a patio in Lake Zurich?
Many villages require one. We confirm with the Village of Lake Zurich for your address before scheduling.
